O Brave New World

The Wink of an Eye

Another turn of the page
Another month drifts by
The time of your life, spent half asleep
Here and gone, in the wink of an eye

Just one more trendy rebel
Just too lazy to care
A frightened state, beyond fight or flight
Indifferent to delight or despair

Apathy, anger, and hate
You think they make you strong
Real emotion seems just a weakness
Indifferent about right or wrong

The path of least resistance
The only course you will take
Denial of responsibility
The only stand you're willing to make

No attempt to earn your keep
No desire to be more
No willingness to be worthier
Of the affection your whining for

I stole out into the night
Back to the fields of my youth
Where once we dreamt the nights away
Dreams of beauty, justice, light, and truth

Imagine my sad surprise
Finding the grounds we had once known
With all the paths we had once blazed
Neglected, forgotten, overgrown

Another turn of the wheel
Another year flies by
Another lifetime, wasted in fear
Here and gone, in the wink of an eye

The Next Wave

Now here it comes, larger than life
Larger than your nightmares, wilder than your dreams
A tidal wave of change, unlike anything you've seen
A Tsunami of chaos, anarchy, and screams

You're not ready and you know it
You've been lazy lately, apathetic, sad
But regret is something you can ill afford
Don't claim you didn't know, don't cry that you've been had

We're moving much too fast now
No one is in charge or thinking all this through
No one counts the cost, or sees the implications
Of what all this madness means, what it means to you

You see it all in your mind's eye
Like a deranged parade passing by
Led by a gun toting, stilted, Uncle Sam
Who trips, and sways, and rants at the sky

You watch helpless from the sidelines
With tears of frustration in world weary eyes
As our youth and hope march off to war again
Full of religious zeal, chanting jingoistic lies

The emperor has no clothes
The Emperor has no clothes.
The EMPEROR has no CLOTHES!
THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!

Mother Earth

There's a tremble in the darkness
Deep within lost mines
A slightly higher ozone level
A subtle change of climes

There's an ant hill in the jungle
Many miles away
Where the ants are slowly dying off
A few more every day

There's an ice cap on the move
As mighty glaciers melt
While we struggle to ignore the signs
The changes we've all felt

There's a roar in the distance
Just outside our hearing range
The stones of our disregard have started
An avalanche of change

There's no way to pretend now
We might not survive
Even just stopping isn't enough
To keep all of us alive

We've got to find the wisdom
Retreat and redeploy
Apply strategy to our progress
To guard the assets we employ

All creatures

Have you heard the latest
It's all the rage these days
Molecular magic, Nuclear transfer
Redefining, redesigning, life in all it's forms

We've go the will, if not the wisdom
We've got the power, and this is just a taste
We know how. We know now!
No time to wait, no time to waste

We're looking forward to less little flaws
With spare parts waiting on our hospital shelves
We're moving it to lands with a little less law
Where we won't have to answer to ourselves

We'll be bringing back lost species
Saber tooth tigers, wooly mammoths, and dinosaurs, galore
The Zoo of future, featuring the creatures of the past
Don't delay, right this way, so much excitement lies in store

Maybe later we'll get creative
Some Unicorns, a tiny Pegasus perhaps
We can use the wings of eagles
And a little zebra DNA to fill in any gaps

Lazarus lives again! We'll be bringing back the dead
Lost loves, lost children, lost pets revived
Absolute death will be a nothing to dread
For a price anything can be survived

And this is just the beginning
Because a better human is waiting in the wings
A longer life span, a perfect body, a better brain
And who knows, what mighty visions they might bring

WARPATH

We're going on the warpath
Beat the war drums, paint your face
Any talk of restraint is treason
Reason gone without a trace

We're going on a Jihad
A holy war, praise god and grace
All infidels beware our wrath
We'll put you all in your place

We've a got score to settle
We'll take it out on your whole race
We can't afford to compromise
In matters of money, or saving face

The time for talk is over
All sides are merely playing for time
Failsafe orders, already sent
No quarter, no rules, in war or crime

There's plenty of excuses
There are justifications to spare
From retribution, to protection
From righteous rage, to double dare

We humans, we're a warlike race
We love to fight and live to die
We're loyal, and tough, and not too bright
And never stop to wonder why

We've got a score to settle
Never mind that we're all one race
We can't find the courage or the will to stop
In this final, fatal, fall from grace

Can't we find the courage to stop
This our final, fatal, fall from grace

The Spires of Atlantis

Sometimes I feel like a stranger
All alone among my own kind
Where is all the hopefulness
That in my youth, I hoped to find

Sometimes in my most private thoughts
I have seen faintly just beyond my reach
Like a fantasy turning to possibility
An oasis on some long forgotten beach

The Spires of Atlantis
As if seen from a distance
Rising up grandly
Shining in sunlit majesty

Where living is simple
And all of the people
Residing there proudly
Abiding in peaceful dignity

In this world where we all live
Truth is just a dream of the naïve
Beauty, just a vision,
And they tell us, only fools believe

Argumentation over reason
A compromise between food and poison
With religion as their sole explanation
They march us off to their prison

As I close my eyes
Tears running down my face
I remember visions under clearer skies
I have faith in a better place

The Spires of Atlantis
As if seen from a distance
Rising up grandly
Shining in sunlit majesty

Where living is simple
And all of the people
Residing there proudly
Abiding in peaceful dignity

Where truth, reason, and beauty
Flow together like poetry
And the sole purpose of society
Is to protect the individual, and keep us free
